Astrig Akseralian
About the Artist
Astrig Akseralian (b.1964, Surrey) draws inspiration from the domestic and natural worlds that surround her. Growing up in North London amidst a household of dogs, cats and other pets, she developed a lifelong fascination with the individuality and spirit of animals. Her earlier career in ceramics and later work in film — including Harry Potter, Gladiator, and Muppet Treasure Island — honed her skill in narrative, observation, and the interplay of colour and form. Today, newly settled in Somerset, Akseralian focuses on painting flora and fauna scenes that celebrate the subtle magic of everyday acts: walking the dog, tending to hens and goats, or exploring the unique charm of allotments. Her work captures the joy, personality, humour and relationships between humans and the living world around them.
Aesthetic
Akseralian’s paintings are layered, tactile, and richly coloured, created on wooden panels that allow multiple layers, marks, and scratches to reveal hidden depths. Her process is iterative and intuitive: figures and compositional elements shift across the surface until she is satisfied with the balance. Loose, expressive marks are combined with carefully mixed colours and pastel accents, giving her works both energy and intimacy. The result is a series of paintings that feel alive — celebrating the personalities of domestic companions and the quiet wonder of nature, often with touches of humour and play.
