About the Piece

'The Dragon is a symbol of the city's patron saint, St George, and the ancient Guild of St George, founded in 1385. Medieval carvings and architectural details, such as the one at Dragon Hall and Norwich Cathedral, now at Norwich Castle, as well as the long standing tradition of a dragon figure in the city procession ('Snap', the famous snapping dragon) have featured within the city. The dragon represents the vanquishing of evil and became a figure of civic pride and celebration. My dragons initially evolved from the one at Dragon Hall. I have a love affair with medieval wood and stone carving, especially ceiling bosses. The dragons are always benign and never especially threatening. The maiden is more likely to take them home and keep them as a beloved pet. This is my homage to those carvings. My drawings are small round compositions, more fluid, detailed and entangled representations than the original carvings, evoking a memory of our rich, lyrical and mostly forgotten folklore.'
