Eri Kato
About the Artist
Eri Kato (b.1967) is a contemporary Japanese artist whose practice transforms the overlooked materials of daily life into works of quiet power and poise. Using printed flyers, envelopes, cardboard and packaging, she folds, tears, and layers her way into a subtle reinvention of the ordinary. Each work carries traces of time and use: a record of the human and material histories embedded within. Exhibiting internationally in France, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Kato has been recognised at events such as the International Non-Objective Art Biennale in Pont-de-Claix, Papier Skulptural in Oberhausen, and the London International Creative Competition. Her work reflects a deep respect for the transient, the modest, and the tactile, finding grace in what others might discard.
Aesthetic
Kato’s compositions possess a meditative stillness — fragile, textural, and profoundly balanced. Her restrained palette and deliberate gestures create surfaces that seem to breathe, revealing the quiet complexity of the everyday. There is an almost spiritual quality to her work: a dialogue between material and maker, presence and absence. The viewer is invited into a space of contemplation, where time slows and perception sharpens. These are pieces that reward patience and reflection, unfolding gradually rather than demanding attention.
