Claire Oxley
About the Artist
Claire Oxley (b.1975, Norwich) draws her inspiration from the ever-changing landscapes and moods of East Anglia. The passing seasons, skies, seas, fields, flowers, and foliage of her surroundings provide the starting point for her work, which charts energy, flux, and the subtle rhythms of the natural world. Oxley’s synaesthesia — primarily experiencing sensations of colour and sound interchangeably — further informs her practice, allowing her to translate music, environment, and seasonal shifts into dynamic, sensorial paintings. Her approach moves fluidly between semi-realism and abstraction, sometimes evoking recognisable scenes, other times pushing the familiar to its expressive limits.
Aesthetic
Oxley’s canvases are vibrant, layered, and evocative, combining unexpected colour combinations with gestural energy. Each painting captures the sensation of place and moment, stirring memory and emotion while bringing vitality and atmosphere into interiors. Her works are simultaneously contemplative and energising, balancing painterly abstraction with hints of the natural world. The results are immersive compositions that engage both the eye and the imagination, offering spaces of reflection and delight.
